Reflections.....Simon Ekrelius....

A show that actually starts relatively on-time at LFW. The music begins with heavy, walking beats.

Inspiration: The architecture of the Gherkin, London.
Another designer who is taking architectural forms as their inspiration. The cold surfaces of the modern London building are clearly evident in use of clear reflective plastics and graphical, yet subtle prints. The large floppy hats were some of the largest seen on the catwalks so far- another trend for SS 2011.

Another inspiration (according to the press release: the Grace Jones Harlequin silhouette.

The collection is heavily structured, yet the use of semi-transparent silks and reflective clear plastic soften the graphic shapes and keep the collection from becoming too conceptual. It also makes the clothes more feminine, whilst cutting a sharp, clean silhouette.

The palette, much like Hannah Marshall is minimal- blacks, greys, off whites, powder blue.... Contrasting textures ground the collection into more wearable fashion pieces, again keeping the literal inspiration at arms length, but the fully transparent raincoat with black structuring pushed it too close to 'The Gherkin' for me.

This is some of the first knitwear which Ekrelius has put in his collection. I saw his work at the On/Off exhibition last year and was pretty impressed- this show/presentation was the next step.
