A fresh start....

While Alexander Wang celebrated with carousels and carnivals I was busy looking through all the offerings of Day 3. For me not many designers caught my eye to but Wang's SS 2011 collected had definitely become a talking point of the social media buzz. As the tweets flooded in I was anticipated something very different from the ultra-successful designer that has come to epitomise modern fashion design.

Hillary Alexander's 'tweet' summarised the collection as 'urban romantic'- something which I completely agree on. Wang recreated white (the trend of fashion week- a more detailed post on this later!) for the modern, edgy woman. There was the fair share of drape but jackets were made from stiffened white canvas creating structural shapes, whilst the pieced-together structure gave them a deconstructed wearability. Subtle surface textures, such as matt silver sequins on the inside of jacket lapels and white boucle knits.

There was the odd glimpse of neutral colour- sand, lemon, turquoise and soft terracotta tones completing Wang's palette for SS 2011.

His inspiration you may ask? According to style.com it's the architecture of his New York loft apartment. Clean, stylish and elegant New York living.

The key to this collection is how the clothes move- another nugget of technology from Style.com- watching clips of each look shows you detail that you would normally have missed until it hits the shop floor.

But is it too much of a departure from Wang's signature look for his dedicated followers? It raises an interesting question of whether a designer should keep a strict design signature? In such a volatile economic climate is it wise or does Alexander Wang know that we all just need something new?
